The help with the problem of climate change.

The world is always
changing and so is the climate. In the past 100 years, the world’s climate has
gotten warmer and warmer; faster than the normal rate. The earth is continually
being stripped of its natural resources. Global warming describes the average
global surface temperature increase from human emissions of greenhouse gases. (Whats in a Name? Global
Warming vs. Climate Change, 2012) The climate of a
region is its typical or average weather. Climate change, therefore, is a
change in the typical or average weather of a region or city. (May, 2011) Climate change has
such a significant impact on the earth. However, there are organizations such
as the UNEP and the WWF that exist to combat climate change. There are also
agreements under the UN like the Paris Climate Agreement that also help with
the problem of climate change. If people intend to help in combatting climate
change, they will need to change their needs of mass consumption.

Firstly, the UNEP is an
agency of the United Nations and it coordinates its environmental activities,
as well as assisting developing countries in environmentally sound policies and
practices. The UNEP is just one of many organizations within the UN fighting
climate change. (About Climate Change, n.d.) The United Nations
Environment activities cover a wide range of practices regarding the
atmosphere, green environment, as well as the ecosystems. The UNEP is the
leading environmentally authority that sets the global environmental agenda.
They serve as an example as an advocate for the global environment. This
organization is trying to fight chemical and waste, climate and clean air
coalition, and help with climate finance. The UNEP is trying to get rid of
chemical waste and this can be seen with mercury. The UN Environment is working
with governments to reduce mercury pollution and its negative impacts. As well,
the UNEP is trying to limit ‘persistent organic pollutants’ which are organic
chemical substances that are recognized as a serious, global threat to human
health and the ecosystems. (Chemicals And Waste, n.d.)The UNEP is a
supporter for climate and clean air coalition. The climate and clean air
coalition is the only global effort that unites governments, civil society and
private sector that is committed to improving air quality and protecting the
climate in the next few decades. (Climate and Clean Air
Coalition, n.d.) The UNEP is also committed to climate
finance. The climate finance refers to local, national or transnational
financing. Its plan is to reduce emissions from large companies. The UN
Environment partnered with different organizations to combat climate change;
like Green Climate Fund, The Adaption Fund, GRID- Arendal, and the UN Framework
Convention on Climate Change. (Climate Finance, n.d.) This organization’s
contributions include bringing science to policymakers, playing a leading role
in transformative global partnerships, and helping dozens of countries develop
national plans to cut greenhouse gas emissions. Not only is the UNEP trying to
fight climate change, so is the Paris Climate Accord.

The Paris Climate Accord
is an agreement within the United Nations Framework Convention on climate
change, which deals with greenhouse gas emissions. It was created in Paris on
December 12,2015 and went into effect less than a year later. The main goal of
the Paris Climate Accord is to keep the increase in global temperature to well
below 2°C. In addition to the 2°C temperature goal, the Paris Agreement also aims
to foster climate resilience and lower greenhouse gas development. (The Paris Agreement, 2016) Out of the 195
countries, 172 countries signed the deal to combat climate change. Each country
develops, determines, plans, and regularly reports its own contribution it should
make to stop global warming. The agreement requires countries to act, while recognizing
their differing situations. Money however, has been a big factor throughout the
negotiations. Developing countries say they need financial and technological
help. Therefore, developed nations will give $100 billion annually to
developing nations to help reduce climate change. (Briggs, 2017) Every five years, there will be a review
of what is accomplished starting in 2018. The UN’s climate science says
greenhouse gas emissions must drop 40-70% between 2010 to 2050 and to zero by
2100, for any chance of hitting the 2°C target. (What is the Paris Agreement, 2017) Not only does the
Paris Climate Agreement help to fight climate change, so does the WWF.

The WWF is an
international non-governmental organization founded in 1961, working in the
field of the wilderness preservation and the field of reduction of human impact
on the environment. The WWF preserves different species, the Artic, oceans,
freshwater, and is approaching habitat-friendly renewable energy in Canada. (What We Do| WWF- Canada,
n.d.)
The WWF is working on building renewable energy solutions. They will work to
build capacity for low-impact renewable energy, such as wind, solar and
hydropower. Switching to renewable energy will slow the warming of the earth,
reduce deforestation, desertification, erosion, and flooding, as well as
diminish disastrous fossil fuel spills in the oceans and watersheds and
invisible but deadly methane leaks into the earth’s atmosphere. With tremendous
wind, solar, hydro, and biomass potential, as well as the longest coastline in
the world, Canada is home to significant renewable energy reserves. If
renewable energy is made Canada’s source of power, it can create tons of new
jobs at home and ability to export to other countries. (Science and Innovation, n.d.) Another aspect WWF
Canada is trying save with climate change is the fresh water. Canada has one
fifth of the world’s freshwater and is home to thousands of lakes, rivers,
streams, and wetlands. This offers millions of people with water to drink, to
grow food, to power houses, and to sustain the environment. WWF’s goal is to
see all of Canada’s waters in good condition by 2025. To reach that goal,
people need to start by understanding just how healthy Canada’s waters are. (Freshwater, n.d.) One can look at
climate change at a sociological level.

Climate change can be
related to sociology because human-caused global warming is one of the major
problems of the 21st century. (Dunlap & Brulle, 2015) Within the last 40
years, knowledge of global climate system has expanded quickly. One of the
authors of the book “Climate Change and Society: Sociological Perspectives”
stated that there are two things that sociology has a unique competence to do,
which are to talk about large scale intuitional processes and dynamics of
institutions at a world systems level. (Spicgel, 2015)It states that all
human activities are resulting in emissions of increasing quantities of gas
into the atmosphere. (Houghton, 2009) The book points at
the sociological knowledge on several topics that can improve one’s knowledge
of adaptation processes. (Dunlap & Brulle, 2015) This is due to the
effects made by humans throughout the century. The book shows that individuals
and households can play an important role in climate change mitigation efforts
by taking action to reduce their own emissions, shifting their consumption
practices, and acting as agents of broader and social change. (Dunlap & Brulle, 2015) Therefore, in a
broad sense, it is hard to undo the damage that has already been done, yet in a
way it is easy since all one person has to do is consume less.

To conclude, climate
change has a significant impact on the world. There are however many
organizations in the world to help stop or slow down the process such as the
UNEP, and the WWF, as well as agreements like The Paris Climate Accord. Agreements
like the Paris Climate Accord are firsts in the world that unite almost every
country to help each other save the world. Everyone needs to take part to try and
stop global warming and its effects. If the temperature keeps rising, living
things on earth will go extinct due to the high temperature. Many animals will
not be able to adapt to the rising temperature. Every person needs to take a
stand to fight climate change in order for the temperatures to decrease. Damage
has already been done to the environment and it is irreversible, but there is
still time to stop more permanent damage from being done.
