Lisa (2017) E-books are mainly text, images and even audio or video packaged
into a single electronic file. E-books exist in different
formats such as PDF, EXE-compiled HTML pages, PDA format. Typing a document in
MS Word and saving the document is already an example of an e-book format.

On a daily basis, As studied by
Darlene Waller(2013) that most higher education students, faculty, educational
administration, teachers and students in K-12 use computers or a smart device
to check e-mail, go online for course updates, or actually engage in online
courses. According to the study of Amy Kraft (2015), a study published in the
journal Library & Information Science Research found out that most of the
students prefer e-books which they call e-readers. But it has pros and cons
depending on the factors.

Advantages
of using E-books

Some of the
practical advantages of going digital are obvious. A portable device can carry
an entire library. Most of the people who prefer e books According to the study
of Patrick Allan (2014), in his study revealed that people prefer e-books
because it is more accessible. You can read it anywhere and people are dreaming
of the accessibility that e-books have brought. It is easily to be read because
adjusting the size and contrast are can be done. And especially it is
storage-free and convenient.

            E-books share some advantages and
Disadvantages same with the textbooks or the traditional books. According to
Wang Lisa (2017), E-books have the low update cost. When the author needs to
update a certain parts in the e-book, the author can edit the electronic
document easily and save the updated version.

            Unlike the usual printed books,
e-books not just contain text and images but it contains audio and videos which
can help the reader. If the person doesn’t want to read he/she can listed to
the audio or watch the video. It is useful for kinesthetic learners. Some
e-books even have flash applications that allow the reader to interact with the
content.

            E-books are searchable, you’ll just
type what you need to read and it will automatically pop up. An e-book also
contains a search button which will allow you to quickly jump to the page
you’re interested in. It pertain the speed feature which the traditional book
doesn’t have.

No shipping cost, it can easily be
downloaded from the web. Most of them are free but some has a price which is
less compared to the textbook. A minute or a second of downloading will lessen
your worries. Going to the bookstore is not needed; you can have a book even at
home.

            It provides the convenience,
cost-free, and less time among the readers. Everything is easy with e-books but
not all prefers e-books. Still most of the students prefer Textbooks or
traditional books because of many reasons.

Advantages
of using Textbooks

            A printed bound
artifact for each year of course or study which contain facts and ideas around
a certain subject. (Encyclopedia of education, 2008) The main reasons student
preferred textbooks were the lack of distractions that are available on gadgets
and computers, as well as the headaches and eyestrain resulted by staring at a
screen.

As stated by Amy Kraft(2015) some of
small studies recommend that reading on a paper is much better for retention
and focus rather than reading on electronic screen. West Chester University
researchers found out that Textbooks or the traditional books enhances the
reading comprehension of the students.

            Students are easily distracted by
e-books as per a small study conducted by Joan Ganz Gooney (2015). Students
can’t focus on what they’re reading because they are tempted to play games or
other things in their gadgets. And also, they’re more engaged with the physical
and interactive multimedia experiences but they could not remember narrative
details on it.

As studied by the scholars from
Stavanger University (2014), the scholars found out those e-books can be hard
to absorb. Students remember more about the book if they read it on a printed
paper rather than reading it on an electronic screen.

Reading on a screen can be tiring
for the eyes and the brain. According to the study from Sweden (2005) and
Harvard (2014), it requires a higher cognitive workload when reading on a
screen. Staring to a screen at night can cause disorder to sleeping patterns.
People who used e-readers at night slept worse and more tired on the next day.
It would be hard for the students to focus to the school.

Reading using a gadget is only
limited due to a limited battery life of a device. Also the reader device may
have technical problems which may lead to the lack of access to the E-book.
Although textbooks were inconvenient, majority of the students chose using
textbooks over e-books. Millennials are engaged and really addicted to their cell
phones, tablets and computers but according to a study that Schaub (2016)
stated that 92% of college students overwhelmingly said in a survey that they
prefer reading printed books than e-books. Physical books were the choice of
the 92% respondents who selected paper over electronic devices. And according
to the New York Times (2015), e-books sales have been falling in 2015.

            These conclude that textbooks still
a better choice for the students. They prefer reading printed paper rather than
on a screen. It both has advantages and disadvantages and it is still debatable
among the higher level of education. Some schools are implementing the usage of
the e-books and some schools are not. Switching from textbooks to E-books takes
time and struggle among the students. It will be hard for the students to adapt
to E-books and that is the reason why the students are still loyal to textbooks
and majority of the students prefer it rather than E-books.
