What Is Reiki?

The act of laying hands on the human or animal body to comfort and relieve pain is as old as instinct. Human touch conveys warmth, serenity, and healing. It also conveys caring and love. Reiki is now known throughout the world as a technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by “laying on hands” and is based on the idea that Universal Life Force Energy flows through us and acts us the source of healing.

Reiki Healing Sessions

Reiki Healing helps relieve physical pain, boosts the immune system, calms the mind, balances the emotions and is a wonderful source of spiritual connection.

A treatment often feels like a warm glowing radiance that flows through and around you. Reiki is received fully clothed, and the client may be seated or lying down. Reiki treats the whole person including body, emotions, mind and spirit creating many beneficial effects that include relaxation, alleviation of pain and enhancing feelings of peace, security and wellbeing.

Reiki is a simple, natural and safe method of spiritual healing and self-improvement that everyone can use. It has been effective in helping virtually every known illness and malady and always creates a beneficial effect. It also works well in conjunction with all other medical or therapeutic techniques to relieve side effects and promote recovery.

Initiation in Reiki occurs through a process called Attunement. The person who is attuned as a Reiki Healer has had her body’s energy channels opened and cleared of obstructions, and not only receives an increased connection to her own life force or Ki, but also reconnects with the source of All Universal Energy. From the time of the first attunement and through the rest of her life, all the Reiki Healer needs to do is to place her hands on herself or another, in order to allow the healing Ki energy to flow through her. She experiences an energy that first heals her and heals others without any fear of depletion. This energy is often experienced as a gentle stream of warmth, or a feeling of heat generated in the hands. Reiki Healer is given a gift that forever changes her life in a positive way.

This process of attunement is what sets Reiki apart from every other form of laying on of hands or touch healing. It is the attunements themselves that are Reiki, and without this process-which must be passed directly from Teacher/Master to student-the healing system is not Reiki, but something else.

Reiki Healing can be used on self, others, pets, plants and even for the proper functioning of inanimate objects (which are also energy). Reiki helps relieve physical pain, boosts the immune system, calms the mind, balances the emotions and is a wonderful source of spiritual connection. It is a wonderful adjunct for healing practitioners such as therapists, acupuncturists, massage therapists, physical therapists, chiropractors etc. who would like to add a gentle energy healing art to their practice.

The Three Degrees of Reiki

Reiki Level I Training ~ The Reiki I attunement itself heals physical level illness in the person who receives it. Following the initiation, the Reiki I healing sessions can be used for self-healing or to share with others. These sessions are for people who are physically present. Such a healing is known as a direct healing-the healer must directly place her hands upon herself or another.

Reiki Level II Training ~ Measurably increases the amount of healing energy and the attunement focuses upon emotional, mental, and karmic healing in the person who receives it. Healing with Reiki II adds considerable power to direct sessions. It also teaches the Healer methods and tools for distance healing, manifestation, and the use of Reiki symbols to increase the focus and direction of the healing session. 

Reiki Level III Training ~ This is the Master Level. A Master is simply a teacher and there is no ego or ownership involved in this term. This attunement connects the Healer to an unbroken stream of Universal Life Energy, and the attunement focuses on spiritual healing and connection to pure joy, oneness with all life, and connection to Source. Reiki II provides the Healer with two additional symbols and the knowledge of passing on attunements. This degree is recommended for all those who wish to teach Reiki and make Reiki an integral part of their lives.
